Star Theatre is China’s first private drama culture industry park. Sponsored by Beijing Tianyitongge International Cultural Art Co., Ltd. in 2007, it is located in the heart of West Chang’an Avenue in Beijing, in the Financial Street, Xidan Business Circle, adjacent to the National Centre for the Performing Arts. It began operating in 2009, and it is a creative experience park for the development of core cross-border art with the drama industry as core.
Star Theatres, a new hub for drama fans, is the first of its kind in the capital. The innovative spirits of the theater is in stark contrast to the traditional cultural establishment in central Beijing. It has five theaters that cater to different dramatic needs, along with a gallery, a reading room and several bars and restaurant, and it aims to become a real cultural village as it expands. That ideal has prompted Star Theater to create what they call "theater and production combined". Unlike traditional State-owned theater houses, small theaters in Beijing don't have a production team; instead, they only provide the space. We have 50 different kinds of productions including drama, musicals, Chinese opera and child’s play. With over one thousand performance per year, the annual audience is 350,000, and the total number of viewers can be up to 2 million. It ranks first in Beijing’s private theater performances, and has won the “New Beijing-style Creative Travel Business Card” in Beijing.
At present, it has accumulated more than 50 original repertoires and has created several small theater classic dramas such as “The unconditional love”, “The trip taking leave without delay”, “One touch love,” “One night one life”, “Wolf”, “Fall in Love in the city without love”, “Big words four dreams”, “The fourth kind of emotions”, musical play “Shakespeare’s Love Letter”, and children’s drama “Daddy-Long-Legs”, “The adventures of the toy planet”, “Divergence 2017”, “The whole Country”, “Three dreams in one day” etc. Since 2013, the Star Theater has held a “Xiqu opera blackbox festival ” with the significance of the city’s cultural brand in October every year, and it has been successfully held three times. Each year, more than a dozen outstanding small theatre drama works from the three places of both sides come together for exhibition. This event not only provides a good creative environment and platform for the drama creators in the three places, but also plays a role in the renaissance of traditional dramas in contemporary Chinese society. At the same time, Star Theatre is also known as Beijing’s most popular and influential theater.
